Notarial Authentication of Documents for use in China (Procedure)
If you are going to work, live, study or teach, amongst other things, in China and you require your documentation to be Notarially Authenticated correctly then this is what needs to be done.
China is one of those coutries which have not signed with the Hague Convention date 5 October 1961, namely the Convention Abolishing the Requirements of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, and therefore the long procedure has to be adpoted.
Please note if China requires the original document to be Notarially Authenticated then click here and this will tell you what original documents can be Notarially Authenticated in South Africa by DIRCO (Department International Relations and Co-operation) which is in Pretoria.
Otherwise the long procedure is as follows:-
- Step 1. Notary Copies / Official Translations to be presented to Notary to enable Notary to prepare the Notarial Authentication Certificate.
- Step 2. Documents will then be presented to the High Court for Authentication in the district where the Notary Public works / resides.
- Step 3. Documents will then be presented to the DIRCO (Department International Relations and Co-operation) for Authentication (Pretoria).
- Step 4. Documents will then be presented to the Chinese Embassy (Pretoria, Cape Town or Durban), for final Authentication / Attestation.
